| Sceletium tortuosum is a short-lived perennial creeping succulent (from the Mesembryanthemaceae family) with characteristic persistent leaf veins that remain on the plant. The leaves dry out and becomes ‘skeletonised’, hence the botanical name Sceletium. Large water cells are visible on the surfaces of the fresh leaves, which give them a shiny appearance. Pale to bright yellow or orange-yellow flowers are borne along the branch tips. Sceletium tortusoum contains mesembrine-type alkaloids (mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol, tortuosamine and other), which interact with the brain's dopamine and serotonin receptors. Mesembrine is usually the main ingredient in leaves. There are eight Sceletium species, all of which are confined to the Cape region of South Africa . Selected strains with high alkaloid content are grown commercially on a small scale in South Africa . Sceletium tortuosum is the best known and most sought after and used in commercial products. |
